The war in Ukraine is often told through headlines, maps, statistics and breaking news. But behind every report is a person whose ordinary life has changed. My name is Petro Voloshynovskyi. I am 46 years old and currently serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This is a personal account, not a news bulletin or an official statement.
Behind the headlines: one Ukrainian soldier’s life
I signed my military contract in 2020. I remember travelling east, the people I served beside, and the strange contrast between ordinary daily routines and the danger of war. In 2021, near Zolote in the Luhansk region, I saw how families tried to live with uncertainty. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022, the meaning of time and home changed again.
Today I continue my service in Ukraine. I do not publish sensitive operational details or the location of my unit. What I want to share is the human side of military service: the memories, the passing years and the hope of waking up one day to a peaceful morning.
